Why Replace Your 1-Piece Steel Door for a Sectional Garage Door?
You may have grown up in a home with a one-piece (also known as a tilt-out) garage door – the kind that swings out and up in one piece, as the name suggests. You might even be living in a home with a one-piece garage door right now, and are thinking about updating. Here are several reasons why a sectional garage door is a much better choice than the existing one-piece door.
One-Piece Garage Doors Are Outdated
One-piece garage doors have not been in production for over 40 years! This means any existing tilt-out door is at least 40 years old, so it’s likely beat up, rusty, and ugly. It is also potentially very dangerous. When the pivot arms give out, the door will fall down when in the open position, leading to damage to anything in its path inside the garage, such as your car.
Additionally, there are no parts available, so any repair necessary will end up requiring a brand-new door. It is better to get out ahead of it, and replace the door before it stops working and restricts access to the garage, or worse, harms you or the contents of your garage.
Tilt-Out Doors Waste Valuable Space
Tilt-out doors take up valuable space, both in the garage and in the driveway. Due to their design, when open these doors take 6-8” of room from the opening height. Also, because they tilt out, you cannot park against the door, leaving you less room on the driveway. Both of these design flaws can seriously affect your car and parking situation, as you might need to avoid buying a larger car so that it can fit in your garage or on your driveway.
Meanwhile, sectional doors open straight up before following the curve in their tracks, meaning you can park right up against them with no fear of damaging your car or having to move it before you can get into the garage. The tracks continue up from the top of the garage opening, meaning you get every inch of vertical space for your car. We can even install a hi-lift system, provided you have the ceiling height, for even more vertical space.
Better Insulation
One-piece garage doors have no insulating factor, nor do they have seals around them. So not only do they do nothing to keep your garage warm in the winter and cool in the summer, but they also do nothing to keep out the elements like snow, rain, and pests.
Our sectional doors from Clopay, Garaga, and Richards-Wilcox all include insulation and seals on all four sides, improving the comfort both inside the garage and even inside your home.
