It’s Summer: A Great Time To Inspect Your Weatherstripping

The summer is here, and it is a great time to inspect the weatherstripping around your garage.  This two-minute inspection can save you money and headaches down the road, so we at Markham Garage Doors encourage you to take advantage of the beautiful weather and take a look at the seal around your garage door.

Weatherstripping is the vinyl seal that is around the sides and top of your garage door.  Common concerns can include cracking, pieces missing, or coming away from the frame.  Any of these issues can create an incomplete seal around the garage door, which can lead to several problems down the road.

If your door is an insulated door, it is important to have a functional seal in order to keep the heat in during the winter months and out during the summer.  If your weatherstripping needs to be replaced, the entire system will not be as efficient as it could be, which in turn leads to added heating or cooling costs.  This is true for any rooms that abut the garage and is especially true for bedrooms above the garage. 

In the fall, rodents start looking for shelter, and the garage is an easy target.  Weatherstripping that is missing pieces or that isn’t tightly fastened to the frame can create the opening they need to slip inside and make themselves at home.  Taking care of any gaps or cracks in the summer, before they start looking, will help to prevent the issue before it starts.

Finally, summer is the best time in terms of practicality for replacing the weatherstipping.  This flexible vinyl is much easier to work with in the warmer months, not only because the hot temperatures make it less challenging to manipulate, but because in the winter the weatherstripping can freeze to the frame.
